Day 1 Huaraz / Chavin / Konchukos Tambo
We head south on the main road that heads to Lima. After 36 kilometers, we turn left at Catac. Two and a half hours later, after taking the 66 kilometer detour to Chavin and driving by lake Querococha and the Kahuish tunnel on the rim of Huascaran National Park you will have reached the Konchukos Tambo Hotel, on the edge of the Mosna River. After checking in and room assignment, the manager will give a short briefing of the lodge and the Konchukos Valley, lunch at the restaurant. Ten minutes by car from the lodge are the archaeological remains of Chavin de Huantar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This ceremonial center was the most important of the Pre-Hispanic Andean cultures from around 800 BC, when the first expansive Andean culture, known as Chavin, built it. Being subject to centuries of natural and manmade destruction (it was used as a quarry), its scenery, massive stonework, labyrinthine tunnels, elaborate drainage and ventilation, its carved heads and lithic artwork present a unique image of prehispanic Peru. After visiting the ruins we will visit the handicraft workshops to see what stone or textile handicrafts are in stock for shopping.Dinner and overnight.

Day 2 Konchukos Tambo (Farm visit)

A short trail takes us to the Fundo Cochao, an experimental farm. The kids will visit the guinea pig farms, try out traditional farming tools, and walk through fields of ancient Inka crops such as oca, olluco, potato, and corn, which the children will be able to see, according to the season. The adults will help prepare a pachamanca for lunch: meats, potatoes, corn and lima beans baked in a hole in the ground – the firewood heats the stones where the meats and vegetable will be put into, then it will be covered becoming an oven. A perfect country meal prepared typically. n the afternoon, a family of Carhuayoc weavers will host us and teach the kids simple weaving techniques, with a diluted version of a traditional loom. Kids will produce a small basic design to take home with them. On returning, a campsite will be established in the lodge gardens. Kids will learn to set up a tent. If the kids are interested, they can camp at groves near the lodge, we will arrange to provide all the equipment and if you want an outdoor tented dinner can be provided.

Day 3 Konchukos Tambo / Huaraz

After breakfast, the kids will visit the local school, sit in a class with children of the same age and, with a translator, they will tell the students about life in their country. The local kids will then tell them about their life and what they learn in school. The clay oven will be lit with firewood in the course of the morning and then on a wooden table, the pizza dough and ingredients will be laid out. Kids will prepare their own pizzas and have them baked in the oven, using local ingredients available for the occasion. Another option is to provide a two hour horse riding excursion from the village after a visit to the site museum which is being built with a donation from Japan and has interesting representations of the life in the times of the Chavin Culture and exhibits some of the original pieces found in the citadel. Return for lunch, to the lodge and pick up our luggage to start the return journey. On the way we will stop by the site museum of Chavin. Opening in August 2008, this exhibit, set up with a donation from the Japanese Government, is modern and holds original pieces rescued from the site and gives you a perspective of how people lived in the time of the Chavin Culture, transporting you back in time.
