Day by Day Description
Day 1 Huaraz /Chavin.
We head south on the main road that heads to Lima. After 36 kilometers, we turn left at Catac. Two and a half hours later, after taking the 66 kilometer detour to Chavin and driving by lake Querococha and the Kahuish tunnel on the rim of Huascaran National Park, you will have reached the Konchukos Tambo Hotel, on the edge of The Mosna River. After checking in and room assignment, the manager will give a short briefing on the lodge and the Konchukos Valley, lunch at the restaurant. Ten minutes by car from the lodge are the archaeological remains of Chavin de Huantar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This ceremonial center was the most important of the Pre-Hispanic Andean cultures from around 800 BC, when the first expansive Andean culture, known as Chavin, built it. Being subject to centuries of natural and manmade destruction (it was used as a quarry), its scenery, massive stonework, labyrinthine tunnels, elaborate drainage and ventilation, its carved heads and lithic artwork present a unique image of prehispanic Peru. After visiting the ruins we will visit the handicraft workshops to see what stone or textile handicrafts are in stock for shopping.
Dinner and overnight.
Day 2 Konchukos / Ichicpotrero.
Leaving the lodge, the road winds slowly uphill above the Mosna River Valley, across from San Marcos. We will pass the small villages of Acopara, Mayan and Yuracyam, until we reach the main trail, next to the Carhuascancha River. We load up our day-packs and start a slow ascent, as our drivers follow us after loading up all our gear. After two hours of ascending a wide trail, passing small plots of farmed land, we get the first glimpses of the snow-capped mountains. We will reach the campsite after four hours of hiking. Here we set up our base - camp and have lunch. After lunch we leave up to the side valley of Ichicpotrero, reaching a small lake that leads to a larger one, passing by a forest of queñua trees and a view of a waterfall, as well as far-reaching peaks in the background. Return to camp, dinner and overnight. (Distance: 9 Kms, Time: 4 hours)
Day 3 MountHuantsan / Konchukos Tambo
After breakfast, a half day hike up the side - valley of Rimarima, will give you
remarkable views of Mt. Huantsan and a glacial lake below the murrain. We return to the camp for lunch and descend to the trail head, where a vehicle will take us back to the Konchukos Tambo Hotel. Dinner and overnight at Konchukos Tambo. (Distance: 12 Kms, Time: 4 hours).
Day 4 Konchukos Tambo / Huaraz
After Breakfast and optional hike to the CarhuayocValley. We will begin this four hour hike in the valley of Carhuayoc, where we will visit textile weavers in their backyard shops. Amongst the guinea pigs and drying corn in their gardens, these farmers became artists, giving a demonstration how marvelous tapestries are woven in intricate wooden looms inherited from their grandfathers. From there we will follow a mountain trail to return to the town of San Marcos. We finish the hike taking a visit to Mrs. Dora's wood collection and a magnolia greenhouse, return for lunch, pick up our luggage and head back to Huaraz the way we came, arriving in the late evening.
